The Makindu model
Rather than an orphanage, children are placed with guardians - often grandparents or distant relatives - so they benefit from living in the community. The Center is open six days a week, and children can come for a hot meal, to play with other children, or to use bathing and laundry facilities they may not have at home. Emotional support and crisis intervention are available.
Nutrition.
A vitamin-rich breakfast and a hot lunch six days a week.
Education.
School fees paid and uniforms provided for preschool through high school.
Health.
Check-ups, medicine, and crisis care when it's needed most.
Family.
Guardians learn income-generating activities including animal husbandry and receive chickens and goats to create a sustainable income and food supply.
A game that gives back, by design.
Mahjong for Makindu began with three lessons and one sister. The game took hold fast and so did an idea: what if a hobby this social could also do real good?
Every set sold, every charm clasped, every lesson booked sends support to children half a world away.
Our founder is a board member of the Makindu Children's Program and visited the Center in Kenya in 2024. What she saw shapes everything we make.
